Dream : DREAM Fellows : 2008 Fellows : Katherine Roelofs
Katherine Roelofs
Interview
Q: What school are you currently attending?
A: Princeton University
Q: What year will you be starting in the fall?
A: Junior Year
Q: Why did you choose to attend the DREAM program?
A: It was located in Philadelphia, close to home. I thought the research being performed by some of the faculty was very interesting.
Q: Who are you working with, and what research are you doing?
A: I’m working with Professor Lowman. We are investigating poly-(vinyl alcohol), PVA, as a possible material for replacing articular cartilage. Overall, we are trying to produce PVA in a porous scaffold, with mechanical properties similar to cartilage, and attach collagen to encourage cell growth throughout. I am characterizing the mechanical and swelling properties of porous samples of PVA. Also, I am working on different methods to attach collagen to PVA and creating porous samples with collagen attached.
Q: What are your goals/aspirations for the future?
A: I hope to attend graduate school in Bioengineering, and eventually obtain a research job in industry or in academia.
