Parimala Samuel
Interview
Q: What school are you currently attending?
A: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY
Q: What year will you be starting in the fall?
A: Junior year
Q: Why did you choose to attend the DREAM program?
A: As a biomedical engineering major at my college, I have decided on a concentration in biomaterials. The DREAM program was an excellent opportunity for me to get more experience in the materials aspect of my studies.
Q: Who are you working with, and what research are you doing?
A: I am working with Drs. Shih and Wan Shih in the Materials Science & Engineering Department. My research involves the synthesis of (Zn1-xPbx)S quantum dots (semi-conductor nanoparticles that exhibit photoluminescence) to determine the composition that will give emission in the near-infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is optimal for tissue imaging.
Q: What are your goals/aspirations for the future?
A: After graduating from college, I wish to pursue a master’s degree in either biomedical engineering or materials science, and eventually work in the field of tissue engineering.
